Lucky/Unlucky Dice #
In Aspiring Legends, subtle modifications to a dice roll’s odds are achieved through the use of Lucky and Unlucky dice. This system allows the Game Master (GM) to adjust the difficulty of tasks, reflecting the situational benefits or challenges a player might encounter.
A Lucky dice grants the player a second chance; it can be re-rolled once. This bonus could come into play if a character is well-prepared or has extensive experience with the task at hand.
An Unlucky dice, on the other hand, introduces additional risk. Should an initial roll of an Unlucky dice result in a 5 or 6, the player must re-roll it, possibly turning a successful outcome into a less favorable one. This modifier is generally used when the circumstances are stacked against the player, such as lack of preparation, a stressful environment, or other adverse conditions.
Characters’ skills can also introduce Lucky or Unlucky dice. For example, a bard might inspire a fellow player, turning some of their dice Lucky. The bard’s performance risk determines the number of dice affected.
To track these modified dice, players can use different colored dice or roll them first if no color variation is available. Lastly, it’s important to note that Lucky and Unlucky modifiers can offset each other, maintaining a balanced and exciting level of challenge in each session.
