Ability Scores #
In Aspiring Legends, Ability Scores are a fundamental aspect of every character. These scores represent your character’s raw talent and potential in various areas.
The six Ability Scores are:
- Might
- Agility
- Stamina
- Mind
- Spirit
- Charm
When performing any action, your relevant Ability Score is your first source of dice for your roll. Both non-combat and combat skills draw upon these scores, meaning that a higher Ability Score can greatly enhance your chances of success in many aspects of gameplay.
Each Ability Score corresponds to a dice count modifier ranging from -3 to +3, with the provision that the overall number of dice rolled can never be less than 1. This ensures that every action has at least a chance of success, no matter how low your relevant Ability Score might be.
Leveling up an Ability Score can improve your dice count, but it may take several levels of improvement before you see a change. The correspondence between Ability Scores and dice modifiers are as follows:
| Ability Score | Dice Count Modifier |
|---|---|
| 1-3 | -3 |
| 4-6 | -2 |
| 7-9 | -1 |
| 10-12 | 0 |
| 13-15 | +1 |
| 16-18 | +2 |
| 19+ | +3 |
Might #
Might represents your character’s physical strength, melee prowess, and brute force. It dictates how much weight your character can carry, the damage they inflict in close combat, and their ability to perform feats of strength.
When performing a physically demanding action, like lifting heavy objects or breaking down doors, you will use your Might score.
This ability is crucial for characters such as warriors, barbarians, or any profession that relies on raw power. A high Might score enhances the performance of such characters, allowing them to excel in melee combat and conquer physical challenges.
Agility #
Agility defines your character’s speed, reflexes, and ability to move with precision. It influences how well your character can dodge attacks, perform acrobatic feats, or handle delicate tasks requiring finesse.
If your character is trying to avoid a trap or attempting to pick a lock, it’s the Agility score that comes into play.
Characters like thieves, assassins, or rangers, who rely on stealth and quickness, would greatly benefit from a high Agility score, making them swift and elusive.
Stamina #
Stamina gauges your character’s endurance, health, and resilience. It determines how long your character can keep going under strenuous circumstances, how much damage they can sustain, and their overall ability to resist illness and fatigue.
If your character is running a marathon, resisting a disease, or trying to survive after taking heavy damage, it’s the Stamina score you’ll be looking at.
This ability is beneficial for all character types, but it’s especially vital for front-line fighters and adventurers who frequently face physical hardships. A high Stamina score ensures they can withstand more and endure longer.
Mind #
Mind represents your character’s intelligence, wisdom, and mental acuity. It measures how well your character learns and reasons, their capacity to solve puzzles, understand complex ideas, and recall information.
When your character is trying to decipher a complex riddle, remember an important piece of lore, or devise a cunning plan, you’ll be using the Mind score.
This ability is particularly valuable for scholars, wizards, or detectives who rely on knowledge and logic. A high Mind score can lead to greater understanding and successful problem-solving.
Spirit #
Spirit reflects your character’s willpower, inner strength, and spiritual connection. It defines how well your character can resist mental influence, tap into mystical forces, or maintain their resolve in the face of fear.
When your character attempts to resist mind control, channel magical energies, or confront terrifying situations, the Spirit score is essential.
Characters like clerics, monks, or psychics, who tap into the unseen realms and inner resilience, would greatly benefit from a high Spirit score. It enables them to resist mental manipulation and wield arcane powers.
Charm #
Charm signifies your character’s charisma, persuasiveness, and social adeptness. It measures how likable and convincing your character is, their ability to lead or inspire others, and their knack for diplomacy.
When your character tries to negotiate a deal, sway a crowd, or befriend a stranger, the Charm score is your guide.
This ability is especially beneficial for characters like bards, politicians, or merchants who thrive in social interactions. A high Charm score allows them to influence others and navigate social situations with ease.
