Creating NPCs

NPC/Monster Creation #

Creating NPCs and monsters in Aspiring Legends is designed to be as simple as possible to keep gameplay fluid. Here are the steps to create a creature’s stat block:

Health #

Most creatures should have low health, usually between 1d6 worth of points, to ensure battles are swift and decisive. However, larger and more challenging creatures could have higher health to encourage party cooperation and strategic play. To calculate their health, roll a number of d6 as there are party members. If you need a boss NPC that should be an epic challenge then the quick method is to multiply the number of players by 10.

You might be wondering why different types of monsters do not have a different amount of health and that is because the GM has other tools in their toolbag to make it harder to kill a monster. If the creature is heavily armored or hard to hit then make sure to add an unlucky dice or two to the Action Rolls used to attack them.

Skill Checks #

Monsters always roll 3d6 for all skill checks and for the GM, Partial Successes also count as Successes. You can determine the difficulty level of these checks by setting a target using the following method:

  • Easy (1)
  • Normal (2)
  • Hard (3)

Generally, attacks should have an Action Target of 1, but other types of skill checks might have higher targets. It is also to remember that based on the consequence, the monster’s attack might auto-hit so can skip this roll.

Damage #

When dealing damage with your NPCs, we try to make this as simple as possible. To this end, the DM will always roll 3d6, pick one of the dice, and multiply it by the average level of the player characters. To decide which dice to pick, consult the options below:

Lowest Roll: Light attack or an attack that hits multiple targets Middle Roll: Standard attack with limited targets Highest Roll: Heavy attack against a single target
