Character Creation

Character Creation #

The character creation process in Aspiring Legends is designed to be a collaborative effort between the players and the Game Master (GM). It allows players to bring their creative ideas to life and build unique characters that fit the game world. Let’s walk through the character creation process step by step:

  1. Conceptualize: Begin by coming up with a general concept for your character. Are you a ninja goblin or a wizard minotaur? Let your imagination run wild and think about the kind of character you want to play.

  2. Name, Race, and Class: Give your character a name that represents who they are. Choose a race and class that align with your character concept. Set your character’s level to 1, as everyone starts at the same level.

  3. Age, Height, and Weight: Determine your character’s age, height, and weight. Feel free to add any additional details about your character’s appearance, backstory, or personality on your character sheet.

  4. Ability Scores: Roll 3d6 six times to determine your character’s ability scores. If you roll a 1, reroll until you get a different number. Once you have your ability scores, fill in the “Dice Count Modifier” on your character sheet based on the following chart:

    Ability Score Dice Count Modifier
    1-3 -3
    4-6 -2
    7-9 -1
    10-12 0
    13-15 +1
    16-18 +2
    19+ +3
  5. Skills: The next step is to choose your character’s skills. Each skill should be recorded with its corresponding Ability Score, for example, “Swordplay (Str)” or “Arcane Lore (Int)”. This mapping helps clarify which Ability Score your character uses to perform the skill. While working with the GM, decide on the appropriate Ability Score for each skill based on your character’s playstyle and concept.

As you pick out skills, it is also an opportune time to consider the level of detail you want in your game. For a more streamlined experience, you can choose broader skills such as “Spellcasting” or “Evocation Magic” that encompass a wide range of magical abilities. On the other hand, if you prefer a more granular approach, you can select specific skills like “Fire Evocation Magic” to represent a focused area of expertise.

Collaborate with the GM to create a list of skills that align with your character concept and the desired level of detail in your game. This collaborative process ensures that the skills you choose are tailored to your character and contribute to an engaging and immersive experience.

Now that you have a clearer understanding of the character creation process, let your imagination guide you as you bring your unique character to life in the world of Aspiring Legends! You begin with the game by picking 5 skills, but you will be able to pick more as you level up. When picking your skills, use the following list of questions to both pick your skill and to develop your backstory. Your goal should be to pick 5 of the most important questions to your character below, but you can also work with the GM to come up with other questions that might be more relavent to the campaign.

  • In combat, what is your preferred skill and why? How does it reflect your character’s personality or background?
  • When your primary combat skill is ineffective or restricted, what secondary skill do you use? How did your character acquire this skill?
  • In a diplomatic or social encounter, what skill would you use to influence or persuade others? What experiences led your character to develop this skill?
  • If your character is stranded in the wilderness, what survival skills do they have that would help them to endure or navigate back to civilization?
  • In a situation requiring stealth or subterfuge, what skills does your character use to remain undetected or deceive others? How did your character learn these skills?
  • If your character is faced with an arcane or supernatural challenge, what skills would they rely upon? Did they learn these skills or are they innately magical?
  • In situations where your character has to provide first aid or medical help, what skills do they have? Was this learned from experience, formal training, or a natural empathy for others?
  • What skills would your character rely on if they had to repair or create something, whether it’s a physical object, piece of technology, or a magical item? What is the origin of these crafting abilities?
  • In a chase, whether your character is the pursuer or the pursued, what skills would they employ to either catch up to their target or elude their followers?
  • If your character needs to gather information or rumours, what skills would they use to extract knowledge from others or to research themselves?
  • How does your character use their cultural or historical knowledge in problem-solving? How did they gain these skills and knowledge?
  • How would your character use their skills to entertain, whether at a grand court function or a humble tavern gathering?
  • What skills would your character use in a negotiation or barter situation to get the best deal or outcome? How have these skills been honed over time?

Now that you have the basics covered, it’s time to work with the GM to flesh out your character’s skills and abilities. On the Skills Page, you will find examples of skills for various settings. Collaborate with the GM to create unique skills that suit your character and the game world.

Enjoy the process of creating your character and let the adventure begin in the world of Aspiring Legends!
